The brief was for a modern take on a period house and the project was featured in the December 2019 issue of Australian House & Garden

So often the"bones"of the house are what attract the buyers or its wonderful character from the period in which it was built. However rejuvenation and creating the zones that work with the family are so often essential.

“Can we use some of our existing furniture”

This is such a common question from clients.

Sentiment can create attachment to various items of furniture, decorative items and rugs and these items can also be a very useful insight to the preferred palettes of clients.

On this project there were many items that were reused, repurposed or restyled.

The antique chaise and chinoiserie cabinet both provided inspiration for the bespoke wallpaper in the master bedroom, with the Afghan Kandahar rug from Cadrys providing not only a warmth but also a marriage between other existing pieces of furniture

Design and styling help balance the old and the new.

In creating an inviting, practical house that is family friendly and aesthetically pleasing there are so many elements to consider including colour and texture. Grasscloth wallpaper and rugs are an excellent way of providing both. Soft furnishings, decorative objets and well considered cushions can add that welcoming feeling of home.

Do I use natural stone or reconstituted such as Caesarstone?

Another very important consideration for home owners is the choice of stone for benchtops,

splashbacks and hearths. The author has a passion for natural stone and so it's not a difficult choice. However aesthetic and function must be balanced according to the clients needs.

In this project the stunning Superwhite Dolomite made for a beautiful kitchen
